About the integration

Since its opening in 1975, the Kodály Institute has conducted graduate courses, summer seminars, special short courses and conferences for music pedagogues, choral conductors, and musicologists - hereby preserving and disseminating the theoretical and practical aspects of the educational philosophy of Zoltán Kodály.

Since May 2004, Hungary's accession into the European Union the issue of reorganizing Hungarian higher education according to the principles of the Bologna Declaration has been on the agenda.
The challenges (higher education system based on three cycles, mobility of students, teachers and researchers) of being a member in the Union impelled institutions to integrate in order to work more effectively.

In November 2004, the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music and the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music signed an agreement stating that the Kodály Institute would be an integral part of the Liszt Academy, as of January 1, 2005, and consequently, of Hungarian higher education.

Reforming the training programmes in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process has been under way at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music. The knowledge and professional experience assembled at the Institute during its 30 years of existence can be easily applied at the second cycle of higher education, that is, on the master's level.

The founder of the Institute, the Ministry of Education officially announced the integration on December 23, 2004. From January 1, 2005, the new, official name of the Institute is Kodály Institute of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music.

After the integration, the Institute functions as an integral but partially independent educational and research unit of the Academy.

Its main activities remained the same, that is,

  • to preserve and disseminate the theoretical and practical aspects of the educational philosophy of Zoltán Kodály;
  • to reveal the theoretical and practical experiences necessary for the development of music education: to work out suggestions in relation to the practical activities of educational institutions;
  • to organise the dissemination of the methods of Hungarian music education abroad;
  • to provide graduate and postgraduate training for Hungarian and foreign music pedagogues in the field of Hungarian music pedagogy and methodology;
  • to carry out research; and
  • to maintain the Zoltán Kodály Memorial Museum in Budapest.

Based on these activities and relying on the more than 30 years of experience, the Institute's main task
after the integration was to establish and launch, in the 2007-2008 academic year,
an MA degree course in Kodály Music Pedagogy.
This course is carried out by the Institute within the Liszt Academy.
